20 New Life Lessons

Production of the debut issue of Style Me Daily Magazine has most definitely been a whirlwind thus far! It's crazy to think that just a year ago I had an idea, a thought...and now it has began to take shape & come to life.

This past weekend I had my last photo shoot to close out this issue. What a crazy adventure that was. Not everything went according to plan at first, but in the end I feel like everything worked out for the best and I ended up with some excellent material for the magazine.---definite example of this process so far. Things haven't always been perfect but that's what life is about...being able to adapt & roll with whatever it throws at you. Through stress and pain I always aim to find the positive, the new life lessons. So, here's some of the new things I've learned on my journey so far...

1. Always plan for the worst.
2. Staying organized really does help.
3. Time is precious, we can never get it back.
4. When in doubt, bring it! (in regards to fashion styling)
5. Everything happens for a reason, nothing is by chance.
6. Never doubt your decisions, there is no such thing as regret.
7. Believe in yourself even when you're the only one. No one will love your baby (in my case my magazine) like you do.
8. Don't give up until it's over, and if you're still breathing right now, it's not over!! Keep P.U.S.H.ing!! (praying until something happens)
9. You have to learn to laugh at yourself.
10. Being understanding, sweet, humble, nice, genuine,& personable will get you way further in life than being a bitch.
11. People hated on Jesus so what makes you think you're so special that they won't hate on you? Embrace it, use it as fuel & empowerment to succeed.
12. It's fashion, thick skin is a must...so build a bridge and get over it.
13. Sacrifice now for the ultimate payoff later.
14. If you're the smartest one in your group of friends, you need a new group of friends.
15. Surround yourself with motivated people because if not,  they will convince you that not being worth shit is acceptable without you realizing it (you know the saying, "one bad apple...)
16. Your intuition is most likely always right, so follow your heart.
17. If sleep is a bigger priority to you then building your business, you might wanna rethink being an entrepreneur.
18. The only way to succeed is to persevere.
19. It's not when you start, but how you finish.
20. [The most important] Thank God & be grateful for your failures and pain in life, it's through these times you grow into the person you are destined to become.

First Editorial Shoot!

This past Saturday was the first shoot for my magazine. It was an editorial shoot done in Dallas. It was a LONG day but we had so much fun throughout the process.

It was a collaborative effort done by some very talented and upcoming people. That's what I enjoy so much about my magazine; it's that it highlights the talents of the "up and coming." We're not waiting for the industry to give us a chance, we are making our own way! That's what life is about right?! You have to have a dream and go after it.

We are the pulse for what's to come and what's new and fresh and soon people will be able to witness it for themselves!

Take a look as some of the behind the scenes of the shoot! [click here for our FB page]

...and so it begins!

It has been a dream of mine to transition Style Me Daily from a blog into a magazine for some time. Well, I have finally graduated college (May 13th whoo hoo!) and now have more time to really focus on my dream and passion.

So, with that being said, an exciting weekend is planned for Style Me Daily! I will be going to help my fab friend and Creative Director of the magazine, Juan Lerma, pull jewelry from some amazing designers! (you have to follow SMD on twitter to find out who!!) Then I will be helping Juan judge for his next major event coming up with Scion! (He is a fashion show producer with Amrel Revilo Productions in which he co-owns with his good friend Eric Oliver.)

Then, on Saturday we will be doing an editorial shoot for the magazine which is sure to be nothing short of AMAZING!

I'm so excited and I think that SMD is off to a great start. I'm surrounded by so many fabulous and passionate people that I could never expect anything less. I know this debut issue will be well worth your wait!

Be sure to stick on the journey with @stylemedaily on twitter and "like" our FB page. We will be making frequent updates on what's going on and the various projects within the magazine!

Stay Addicted! This is definitely gonna be a wild and exciting ride!

Where has SMD been?!: Barron & J Fall Look Book Exclusive!

In the meantime of me updating and working on my beloved Style Me Daily and the new direction I will be taking my blog, I have kept myself busy working, networking, and getting as much experience as I possibly can before I graduate (Friday May 13, 2011 by the way! Whoo hoo!)

I landed an internship with The Fashionistas, which is a non-profit organization in Dallas, whose main efforts goes towards raising money for various fashion causes including fashion scholarships for design students. They also support emerging designers, and provide opportunities to mingle with Dallas's fashion elite!

I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm their Events Intern and support the events they do (basically PR work). I'll try and blog more about my experiences and things that I'm learning along the way...and give updates of events that they have!

Also, I recently put on my second fashion show for my sorority (Delta Sigma Theta). My chapter organizes a fashion show each year in efforts to raise money for charity! I have been chair for the past two years and this year I was especially proud of the outcome because it surpassed my expectations! I think that it was a great event overall and definitely a learning experience for me to grow as a fashion stylists.

Another exciting thing!.. I was recently invited by a friend of mine (Victoria), to assist on the shoot of fashion designer, James Martinez. He's the designer of the sleek and edgy line, Barron & J. I loved his aesthetic! TOTAL glam-edge! (glam + edge = glam-edge....and yes I just made that up just now...lol).

He did a great job of mixing some fun colors and fabrics with the subtlety of sweet pastels. You could also tell that he had a great eye for detail and always added a personal touch in each of his pieces (including zippers in his designs seems to be his thing and I loved it! I remember doing a trend report on zippers once! they always add that little edge to a garment!)

He was so cool for allowing us students to come in and assist in the shoot. He also took time to teach us techniques that he uses. He taught us how to do a "fake hem" with out any of the pins showing! May seem minor but in fashion minor details are mah-jor! (as said in my Rachel Zoe voice! lol). I really enjoyed the shoot, and got to meet some really cool people. You should check his website out here! And be sure to look out for his new fall line!
