Janelle first caught my eye while watching BET's Rip the Runway. I actually wasn't familiar with her work before that time but after watching I was inspired by her fabulous personal style. She is a 24 yr. old musician whose sound is like James Brown reincarnated! I think she not only offers a fresh sound to music but through her fashion choices as well.
As a fashion lover and as a part of my own personal style, I'm always interested in mixing masculine styles with feminine touches and that's exactly what she accomplishes all too well. Her looks are chic and well thought out, she says that her fashion choices (her bow tie, jacket, and slacks) are really a tribute to the workers in her family; mimicking a "uniform" to pay homage to them.
"I call it my ‘uniform’. My mother was a janitor and my father collected trash, so I wear a uniform too. I’m trying to open doors for girls who look like myself and have been told they can’t sing about this or that.”-Janelle
Whatever her reasoning behind her chic style I think there is one thing we all can agree on...it definitely is fresh, inspiring, and unique!
